A little taste of tailwinds today
Beautiful flying weather today, mostly light winds but all over the place. I was flying into Sussex County in northern NJ. Everyone was landing on 21, while ASOS was calling for 7/8 knots out of 350, or 6 knots variable. I didn't feel like going against the flow, but would have chosen 3 based on what I heard. I decided to land anyway, as ASOS went to variable winds and stayed there for a few cycles. On final to 21, everything stabilized, speed just right. At less than 100 feet up, crossing the road, the bottom dropped out suddenly. Took a fast shot of power to get things back on track. I guessed the wind had swung around behind me at just the wrong time. During runup I almost swung around and headed for 3. Once again, ASOS switches to variable winds, just as I start to head back, so I went ahead and took off on 21. As soon as I lifted off the airplane settled, almost back to the runway. I put the nose down to gain speed. It took a few seconds longer than I was comfortable with. Clearly tailwinds messed with me at the most vulnerable, low-speed points of landing and takeoff. It was a good experience. I know pilots who don't seem to care about a bit of tailwind. Guess I'm not one of them. Next time I'll trust my instincts and not test fate.
