Thread: Why do you fly?

  1. Why do you fly?

What is it that got you to fly and what is it that keeps you there?
Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.

For as long as I can remember, from far, far back into my childhood, I was (and still am) fasinated with airplanes, and with things that fly. I would daydream about flying when I was a kid in school, built every model aircraft to my knowledge that ever existed, read everything that I could get my hands on about flying. It was (and still is) an obsession with me. I had always wanted to be a pilot, but for some reason, when I was younger, everybody always told me that I could not fly, could never become a pilot. I was told that I was not smart enough, that flying was too hard for me to learn to do it. The sad thing about it is that after hearing it for so long, I believed it. My best friend (who flies for NetJets) kept telling me that I could do it, and finally, while talking to a buddy where I was stationed at the time, I learned there was a military flying club there. I went over and signed up, about a week later i took my first lesson. I had a good deal of encouragement from someone that at one time, I had thought was a friend, and I finally was able to complete training and pass the checkride. Really sad, that people can affect a person so negativly that they can be made to think that they can't do something that they want to do for all of their life, and find out after all those years that it could have been done much earlier in life. I often think about how much I miss in my younger years, when I could have been flying for all those years, really sad. But WTF, I finally got to realize a dream that I had, had for years, so at least I didn't completely miss out. Why do I fly, because I love it, because it is an obsession and fasination. Now, it is to a point that if I couldn't fly, I'd have little reason left to live for, flying (and skydiving) are the only things that make life worth living to me. So, that's why I fly.

i wanted to fly since my first airshow. When i was a kid i was fascinated by the B-17 flying fortress. Thats what got me wanting to be up in the air. i wanted to fly even before i ever got in an airplane. when i was a kid i thought the air force was the only way to fly....until my dad showed me the light and told me the right way to go....The Navy. Since i was in junior high i was busting my butt for that pilot slot in the Navy and I eventually got it. God knows i'm not flying for the money or anything else except for my personal enjoyment and the feeling of accomplishment everytime i step out of the aircraft.
To our wives and sweethearts..may the two never meet.

    Thumbs up

I's say that this statement pretty much sums it up for almost everybody here! Outstanding statement!

I have always loved flying. Ive almost got into some car crashes or break my neck from looking because when im driving by th airport I stare at the jets coming in and out of the airport. If some hot girl came up to me and ask if I wanted to have sex or fly I would chose a day flying. If someone took flying away from me I could probably not live. When I go for a week without flying I start going crazy. I only have like 25 hours so I have not been flying for awhile but im sure nothin could keep me from flying.

    Love it.

I'll be happy as long as I can make an ok living and support a wife and two kids.

Asking for anything more than that right now would be unrealistic in these times...and it'll get alot worse before it gets any better, if it ever does.
Disclaimer: I think, I'm not sure, don't crucify me if I'm incorrect. I really don't know what I'm talking about 99% of the time.

Ok, I don't love flying THAT much.

You'll change your tune after a little more time in a plane

Since I was 5 and my Dad would take me to LaGuardia to watch the planes - I wanted to fly. One day I just decided to learn, Now I am fortunate enough to mix flying with my practice and get the best of all worlds.

I've deeply wanted to fly since I was 6, so getting my PPL at 36 was one of the best things I've done.

I always love the way birds soar through the sky. The ability to defy gravity and move about in an ocean of air. I think what got me really hooked on wanting to fly, was when I first saw the movie top gun at age 15 (I am barely 21). I always wanted to be Maverick, handling that beast and pulling those negative G's. I just recently got my PPL, and I guess what keeps me up there is the feeling that I get when I am soaring through the sky, where I share my passion with others.
