Why pilots avoid polarized lenses

This is the single most important point, and it surprises most new pilots. Polarized lenses are great at killing glare off water and roads, but in the cockpit they cause two problems. First, many glass-cockpit and tablet displays use LCD screens that can go dark or blotchy when viewed through a polarizing filter, so you can lose your instruments at the worst moment. Second, the polarization can reveal stress patterns in laminated windscreens as rainbow blotches that obscure your view outside. For both reasons, the FAA and most manufacturers recommend non-polarized lenses for flying.

Glass or polycarbonate lenses?

  • Glass lenses give the sharpest, most distortion-free optics and resist scratches, which is why classic aviator lenses use them. They are heavier and can break on hard impact.
