The sport pilot certificate is the fastest, lowest-cost way into aviation. It requires fewer hours than a private certificate, and notably it does not require an FAA medical certificate as long as you hold a valid U.S. driver’s license. Here is how it works and who it is right for.
This is part of our How to Become a Pilot guide. Compare it with the full private pilot license.
What a sport pilot certificate is
The sport pilot certificate lets you fly aircraft that meet the FAA’s sport pilot eligibility criteria. It was created to give people an affordable, lower-barrier route into flying. You can later step up to a recreational or private certificate, and the hours you log count toward it.
Big update: the FAA’s MOSAIC rule (effective October 22, 2025) replaced the old fixed light-sport weight limit with performance-based criteria, such as a maximum clean stall speed. This expanded the airplanes a sport pilot may fly to include many four-seat models (you may still carry only one passenger) and added the ability to fly at night with training. Some provisions phase in through 2026, so confirm the current specifics with the FAA.
The big advantages
- No FAA medical required. You may use a valid U.S. driver’s license in place of a medical, provided you have not had your most recent FAA medical denied, suspended, or revoked.
- Fewer hours. The minimum is 20 hours, versus 40 for the private certificate.
- Lower cost. Fewer hours and simpler aircraft mean a lower total.
The limitations
- Fly only aircraft that meet the sport pilot eligibility criteria
- Carry no more than one passenger (even in a larger aircraft)
- Visual flight rules only; night flight is permitted with additional training and an endorsement, which also requires BasicMed or an FAA medical (day flight can still use a driver’s license)
- Below 10,000 feet MSL, or 2,000 feet above the ground where that is higher
- No flying for compensation or hire
- No flight in Class B, C, or D airspace without additional training and an endorsement
Who it is right for
Sport pilot is ideal if you want to fly for fun on nice days, keep cost down, or have concerns about qualifying for a medical. If you expect to want night flying, more passengers, or travel in a faster airplane, the private certificate is the better long-term target.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a medical for sport pilot?
No FAA medical is required if you hold a valid U.S. driver’s license and have not had a recent FAA medical denied, suspended, or revoked.
How many hours does sport pilot take?
A minimum of 20 hours, though many people need somewhat more.
Can you carry passengers?
One passenger maximum, even in a larger four-seat aircraft. Day flight uses a driver’s license; night flight requires training plus BasicMed or an FAA medical.
Can you upgrade to a private certificate later?
